Getting Started

Who Can Race

Anyone can race from the age of 4 to at least 64.  It does not matter if you’re a boy or a girl we have fun at all ages.  Some families have brothers, sisters and adults racing!!

What do you need

To get started you need up to a 20” bike, so that you can start in the “Novice” Class.  You can come the track on any race day, (we do close for inclement weather,) there will be a number of people willing to help you get started.  You can also stop at Mikes Bikes on Great Mills in Lexington Park, MD.  In order to race everyone is required to have an ABABMX membership.

Race Info

2012 ABA Rules

ABA Membership form.  Please fill this out and bring it with you to the track.  For any questions there will be people to help you fill out the form.

Equipment

Your Bike

When starting out it is not necessary to spend tons of money on a bike.  The bike you normally ride is most likely good enough to get you going with some adjustments.

Make sure all bolts are tight - especially your axle and stem bolts.  Remove any freestyle type axle pegs.  All reflectors/brackets must be removed for safety purposes.  If your bike has a kickstand, it must be taken off.  You will eventually need a number plate.  You will be provided a temporary number plate with your membership purchase.

Clothing and Equipment

It is required that you wear a long sleeve shirt and long pants or jeans.  Helmets are also required.  The ABA recommends a full-face helmet.  Many tracks require a full-face helmet.  We have a few loaners at the track.  Any enclosed pair of sneakers will do.

Here are some recommended but not required equipment:

BMX style gloves

BMX style knee and elbow pads

Membership

Every rider practicing or competing on any ABA sanctioned track must obtain an ABA membership prior to riding on the track. Memberships can be purchased at the track.

One-Day Membership – Is exactly what it says.  It is to allow you to try out the sport, once.  We recommend that you get at least the Temporary Membership and give it more that one tryout.

Temporary Membership – Is a 30-Day Membership good at any ABA sanctioned track.  It gives you a number of chances to tryout the sport.  When you decide to upgrade your membership to Full Membership the cost of the Temporary is partially applied.

Full (Annual) Membership – The Full Membership is valid for 1 year at any ABA sanctioned event.  Full membership riders will receive the official membership card and a subscription to the BMXer magazine.  Additionally, each rider joining at a local track will receive a current rulebook; a BMX New Rider Manual and an official ABA numbers.
