Hi all, let’s talk heat for a minute. Although we haven’t had any issues at the track, we’d like to make sure everyone is staying safe. Obviously, this time of year we’re dealing with severe heat/humidity and some reminders are never a bad thing.
Some things to think about for riders and families:
-Fluid replacement before, during and after exertion
Waiting until you’re hot and thirsty to start hydrating is too late. Plan ahead for races/practices prior to the event, prior to the day of. If you’re doing multiple days a week of racing and practicing, hydration should become part of your lifestyle.
Recommendations vary on work to rest ratios depending on heat, activity, clothing, acclimatization etc. Plan ahead, watch the time, know yourself/rider and incorporate rest periods.
-Take real breaks
A break is not riding around off the track or playing soccer in the grass. A break is hydrating, finding a cooler spot, sitting down, and maybe a light snack. Also, because of our sport, we must wear certain types of clothing. When you’re on a break remove a layer of riding gear. The helmet comes off, pads can come off, try trading your jersey for a t-shirt or tank.
Obviously, there is much more information and things to think about than just these. This is just a reminder and to reinforce what we are all hopefully already doing.
